Setting the External Grade in Blackboard

This is the first post in a series of Building Mobile Friendly Blackboard Courses.

When Blackboard courses are created, a Total Column is included by default and set as the External Grade. If you’re using a weighted column as the primary way of displaying your grades, it is recommended to set it as the external grade. The reason for this is that the external grade is shown to students in the Blackboard App and in MyBlackboard.

Screenshots

As you can see in the first screenshot, the total column is displayed, and in the second screenshot, the weighted column is displayed.

The same occurs when accessing the My Blackboard Grades page.

Steps

To set your weighted column as the External Grade, you’ll want to complete the following.

  1. Navigate to the Full Grade Center.

  2. Locate your weighted column.

  3. Click the chevron icon to open the column’s menu.

  4. Click ‘Set as External Grade.’

You will now see a green checkmark to the left of the column title.
