Adding Alternate Text to Images in Microsoft Word

Adding alternative text (“alt text”) to an image provides a textual version of the graphic. This is beneficial for screen readers as it’ll be able to verbally describe the image to the user.

The following instructions are using Microsoft Word for Mac, Version 15. The same steps can be followed when using Microsoft Word for Windows.

  1. Right click on the image and click Format Picture.
    Right click menu on image
  2. Click the Layout and Properties Icon.
  3. Click Alt Text to open the window
  4. Enter your alternative text in the Description field.
Microsoft Word Format Picture sidebar for alternative text
