Adding Alternate Text to Images in Microsoft Word

Adding alternative text (“alt text”) to an image provides a textual version of the graphic. This is beneficial for screen readers as it’ll be able to describe the image to the user verbally.

Instructions

The following instructions are using Microsoft Word for Mac, Version 15. The same steps can be followed when using Microsoft Word for Windows.

  1. Right-click on the image and click Format Picture.

  2. Click the Layout and Properties Icon.

  3. Click Alt Text to open the window

  4. Enter your alternative text in the Description field.
